West Buckland has been described as “a gem of a school in an exceptional location” by the Good Schools Guide and has recently been rated in the Top 100 co-ed boarding schools in the UK, by best_school.co.uk. West Buckland is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school set in 90 acres of stunning countryside in the South West of England. Students enjoy learning in a beautiful and safe rural location, close to the spectacular Atlantic coast in North Devon.
Teaching is challenging and stimulating, providing a strong academic education. Students also benefit from exceptional opportunities in sport, music, the performing arts and outdoor activities. We pride ourselves on the quality of the EAL provision.
The heart of the school is contained within handsome 19th century buildings with many impressive new facilities added in recent years. In autumn 2015, a fantastic new co-educational sixth form boarding house opened. This exceptional facility provides students with en suite bedrooms, a variety of social spaces and gives a ‘pre-university’ type experience. At the same time, the school also opened a new library and study centre. This provides open plan learning spaces, library and IT resources, classrooms, a dedicated sixth form study area and a higher education and careers department. Students also enjoy impressive facilities for art, design, technology and drama along with an outstanding sports complex.
For ten consecutive years well over two-thirds of A-levels have been passed at A* to B grades, with 100% university placement success. Students are welcomed into a strong and supportive community with a strong focus on pastoral care. Boarding students are looked after by a dedicated team of houseparents who do all they can to ensure our children are happy and flourish at West Buckland. The most recent ISI inspection rated our arrangements for pastoral care as “Excellent”.
