What's new

What's new

New state-of-the-art-accommodation

The university has recently opened a new, state-of-the-art student village for incoming students.

The development includes modern townhouses and apartments, complete with communal spaces, bookable study areas and a range of other modern facilities, significantly increasing the amount and choice of student accommodation available to incoming students. Over 2,000 flats have now been completed, complimenting an existing network of housing options across campus.

The development is part of Sussex's ongoing commitment to guarantee all students accommodation and help ensure their student experience is as enjoyable as it can be. Find out more about how Sussex is growing its campus.

New Student Centre

Sussex's new Student Centre will act as the heart of the student experience on campus. The new centre will be the go-to place for students to access face-to-face information, advice and guidance services when it opens in the academic year 2021-22.

Facilities in the new Student Centre will include flexible spaces for students to meet and collaborate, spaces for workshops and group work, rooms for confidential advice sessions and meetings, and an outdoor courtyard, as well as office space for staff who work directly with students.

A cafe will also form part of the development, as well as five new retail units near the front entrance.

The university supports its teaching excellence through a globally competitive research programme and world-class research infrastructure. Sussex has produced three Nobel Prize winners, 12 fellows of the British Academy and a winner of the prestigious Crafoord Prize, while Sussex's numerous research centres, including the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and the University of Sussex Business School's Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), are at the forefront of global research initiatives.

89 per cent of University of Sussex research was assessed as ‘world-leading' or ‘internationally excellent' in REF 2021.

Department structure

Department structure

The University of Sussex was founded in 1961. It currently teaches over 18,000 students with over 3,300 members of staff. Sussex attracts staff and students from more than 140 countries to its campus and nearly a third of staff come from outside the UK.

The university is comprised of ten distinct schools of study. Together with the Doctoral School and a variety of research groups, these form the academic core of Sussex. The University of Sussex Business School is accredited by EQUIS and AMBA, and are a member of the UN Global Compact and have signed up to the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME).

Sussex has over 500 different undergraduate and postgraduate courses on offer, including a number of interdisciplinary and hybrid courses. Interdisciplinarity has always been a fundamental component of a Sussex education, enabling students to personalise their course to match their passions and ambitions.

International students have numerous ways in which they can customise their degree. An expansive study abroad programme allows students to study for a semester or a year at hundreds of partner institutions around the world, broadening their academic and cultural horizons. Students can also opt for a placement year with a professional organisation, learning fundamental insights into the world of work and providing essential preparation for future careers.

Sussex also offers a range of non-degree study programmes. A popular Summer School programme runs every year, offering three, four and six-week courses over a range of different subjects. Pre-sessional English Language courses, run by the Sussex Centre for Language Studies over the course of the year, prepare students for degree-level study.

The University of Sussex is committed to ensuring that students of every nationality and background are able to access and benefit from a world-class education.

The university accepts a variety of international qualifications and certificates. Prospective students will need to demonstrate good academic achievement and may need to show completion of additional studies. Offers depend on grading structures in the student's home country and the entry requirements for their chosen course.

For students whose English language proficiency is not at the required level, or if English is not their first language, a number of International Foundation Year courses are available through the International Study Centre, based on campus. Pre-sessional English courses are also offered by the Sussex Centre for Language Studies. Facilities

Facilities

Students at Sussex will find a range of facilities to help them thrive while living and studying on campus.

The university is home to a selection of cafes and restaurants featuring local, fresh produce and catering for a variety of tastes and dietary requirements. Menus are inspired from cuisines around the world.

Falmer Bar, Northfield Bar and The Clubhouse provide lively settings for socialising and enjoying Students' Union and student society events, while the popular Room 76 cafe is an ideal location for catching up with friends over cake and coffee.

Featuring two sports complexes, including six tennis courts, three floodlight pitches and two fitness rooms, Sussex caters for all fitness needs. The Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, based on campus, acts as a world-class, contemporary arts space.

There are a variety of health facilities on campus open throughout the year, including a well-established health centre, dental practice and pharmacy. Students can also visit the Student Life Centre for any academic or personal concerns and speak confidentially to trained Student Life Advisors.

Other facilities include a small supermarket and laundrettes.

The university continually invests in improving its amenities. A new Student Centre, due to open in the 2021-22 academic year, will act as a hub for the student community and feature modern social and workspaces, meeting rooms, and a variety of student services.

Students at Sussex enjoy easy access to Brighton, one of the UK's most exciting and vibrant cities. Just a short journey from the campus itself, Brighton has a rich history of maritime and creative activity and is today famous for its range of independent cafes, shops, entertainment venues and festivals, as well as an iconic beachfront.

Sussex is also close to the historic town of Lewes, featuring cobbled streets and picturesque views over the South Downs National Park, while London is just an hour away by train.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

Sussex offers a wide range of scholarships and awards for students at every stage of their educational journey, including student loans, scholarships and funding opportunities.

Sussex's country scholarships provide overseas master's degree students with a GBP 3,000 reduction in tuition fees, including those from Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey and Vietnam.

The university also offers a Chancellor's International and EU Scholarship, providing academically gifted undergraduate and master's degree students with a GBP 5,000 fee waiver.

Numerous subject specific awards are also available, including the Business School International Masters Award. All international applicants who study a full-time master's degree course at the Business School, starting in September 2021, will receive a GBP 3,000 award towards their overseas tuition fee, in celebration of the Business School's top 15 ranking in the UK for Business and Economics (THE WUR 2022).

Sussex is also a popular destination for Chevening scholars. Since 1983, it has welcomed thousands of students from around the world who have received funding from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to undertake their studies at the university, before going on to do incredible things.
