Overview

Founded in 1881, the University of Liverpool is the original ‘redbrick' university and a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group, associated with nine Nobel Laureates. With almost 30,000 students including 8,000 international students from over 130 countries, Liverpool offers a diverse and welcoming place to live and study.

First-class, state of the art facilities and outstanding student support ensures the university is consistently ranked in the top 30 universities in the UK (The Times 2024), and among the top 200 universities in the world (QS World Rankings 2024).

As a Russell Group University, research is central to everything, and the university reinforced its place as a world leading research institution in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), with 91 percent of the university's research being classed as world leading or internationally excellent.

What this means for students is, Liverpool offers outstanding academic teaching, informed and delivered by inspirational experts, at the forefront of developments in their field. Which no doubt also contributed to the university being awarded the highest rating of Gold, in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023.

Life at the university isn't just about academic excellence. As a campus university at the heart of a vibrant city, Liverpool has it all, including award-winning student accommodation, and everything students need is right on campus.

Liverpool has a worldwide reputation for sport, music, architecture and culture for students to explore, and an incredible range of restaurants, bars and shops to appeal to all budgets and tastes. With all of this on offer in one of the most cost-effective student cities in the UK, there really is nowhere quite like Liverpool.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Several international qualifications are accepted for undergraduate admissions. Applicants should check the country specific requirements page on the university's website for the most relevant information.

Applicants for a taught master's degree will usually be required to hold the equivalent of a UK bachelor degree. Similarly, for MPhil and PhD courses, international applicants need to hold a master's qualification, the equivalent of a high-grade bachelor's degree, alongside some research experience and thesis writing.

International applicants also need to demonstrate English-language proficiency. A minimum of CEFR B2 in each component (speaking, writing, listening and reading) is required and is also necessary in order to secure a study visa for entry into the UK.

For students who do not meet these minimum requirements, there is an English Language Centre on campus which runs pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses to improve skills to gain a university place. Some of the shorter course (12 week, 10 week and 6 week options) can be studied online or on campus.

International applicants who have different education systems from the UK may require additional preparation before commencing a degree at the University of Liverpool. Applicants can study with Kaplan's University of Liverpool International College (UoLIC) via several pathways programmes.

Taught in a new state-of-the-art facility on campus, once pathway programmes are completed, students have guaranteed progression onto their chosen University of Liverpool degree course.

UoLIC Undergraduate options are:

  • Foundation Certificate in Business, Law and Social Sciences
  • Foundation Certificate in Science and Engineering

UoLIC Postgraduate options are:

  • Pre-Masters Programme in Business, Economics and Finance
  • Pre-Masters Programme in Law and Social Sciences
  • Pre-Masters Programme in Science and engineering
